In EDI integrations, businesses often see both AS2 MDNs and 997 Functional Acknowledgments. Both are important, but they confirm different parts of the transaction flow.
What Is an AS2 MDN?
An MDN, or Message Disposition Notification, is used in AS2 communication. It confirms that the AS2 message reached the partner’s AS2 system at the transport layer.
What Is an EDI 997?
A 997 Functional Acknowledgment is an ANSI X12 transaction. It confirms whether the EDI document inside the message was structurally received and validated at the document level.
Main Difference Between MDN and 997
- MDN confirms message receipt at the AS2 transport layer
- 997 confirms document acceptance at the X12 document layer
This means you can receive an MDN even if the EDI file later fails validation. In the same way, a valid AS2 transmission can still result in a rejected 997.
When You Need Both
Many enterprise EDI environments depend on both MDNs and 997s for complete visibility.
For example:
- MDN received, but no 997 may mean transport succeeded but EDI validation or downstream processing did not finish
- No MDN received usually points to an AS2 communication issue
- 997 rejected usually means the X12 document had structural problems even though delivery succeeded
